“My dad was a wash out from a Baptist seminary growing up so I grew up well versed in the Bible. I always have had some sort of belief in a...Creator or Something. To be honest with you, what really kept me believing in some Divine Good is that there is so self-evidently an active evil in the world.

“At times I’ve struggled with belief in God but I’ve never stopped believing in the Devil,” I said.

“That’s pretty dark there, Hollis,” Marcel said.

“It’s a dark world,” I responded.

“True.”

“Anyways,” I said with a puff of the Marlboro, “Anastasia was the best thing that ever happened to me. She made it easy to believe because she was such a...pure soul. So perhaps I got into the religion with less than purely spiritual intentions but I found myself drawn in. You know at least until...everything that happened.”

We sat silent for a while as we wound through the mountain pass. We reached the summit and for a brief moment you could see the vast brown sea that lay stretched before us. Only the black streak of the road cut up the monotony of the expanse of browns.

Finally Marcel cleared his throat and said, “For me...between growing up and then taking this job...I straight up couldn’t cope without some sort of faith. It’s like a ray of light in this upside down world man. Like I look at little kids and I know there’s good in the world. I know you’ve been through it man but you gotta find a way to see some good in the world or you’ll just eat yourself up big dog.”
